CUSD Pays Tribute to The Life and Legacy of the Honorable Marian Bergeson

July 6, 2016 - SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO—It was with much sadness that we heard of the passing of The Honorable Marian Bergeson this morning. Her work and her legacy continue to make an impact on Capistrano Unified students and the education they receive in our public schools.

Marian Bergeson was a schoolteacher, a School Board Member and a Newport Beach City Council Member. In 1978 she was elected to the California State Assembly’s 74th District. In 1984, she made history by winning the 37th District State Senate Seat—the first woman ever to serve in both the State Assembly and State Senate.

In 1985, she became Supervisor for Orange County’s 5th District and then spent three years as the Secretary of Education.

“Her dedicated advocacy for young people and high-quality education is such a gift for our children in public schools,” said Superintendent Kirsten Vital. “It was such an honor to celebrate her work and her 90th birthday at Marian Bergeson Elementary School last year. She is a great example of a truly dedicated public servant.”

CUSD Board President Amy Hanacek acknowledged, “Marian Bergeson’s passing is a huge loss to education. The loving tributes shared throughout the state today prove that her poise, her strong, joyful presence and her wisdom were a guiding light to many. She loved her work and serving children and we will truly miss her.”

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees and all of our CUSD personnel, we want Ms. Bergeson’s family and friends to know that they are in our thoughts and prayers,” stated President Hanacek. “The very Honorable Marian Bergeson left a lasting impact on our students and we are grateful for her leadership and life.”

Character Counts with Bergeson Shining Stars

ello Bulldogs and welcome back for another great year!  We are happy to once again launch our Character Counts program called “Shining Stars.”

This program was implemented several years ago to inspire kids to realize that they can change the world, one good deed at a time.  The concept is to do something helpful and/or meaningful for another person and then ask them to “Pay it Forward,” in other words, ask them to repay a good deed by doing a good deed for another in return.  We call this “Paying it Forward.”  Amazing things happen when this occurs!  We will recognize nominated students at a Thursday morning flag assembly by calling them up front and displaying a star with the students name on our Character Counts Shining Star bulletin board located in the Multi Purpose room.

To nominate your student or someone you witness displaying exemplary character, please complete the attached ”Shining Star Program form and drop it in the “Shining Star” box located on the book shelf in the front office.  Forms submitted prior to the end of school by Wednesday will be announced the following day at the Thursday morning flag assembly.  Parents are encouraged to attend and take photos.

The students last year demonstrated amazing character and we displayed over 100 Stars.  This year, we will challenge and encourage each and every one of our students to find ways to make a difference and to then encourage others to “Pay it Forward.”  We can’t wait to see how your children make a difference!

Additional forms can be found next to the “Shining Star” box in the office as well.

You might say, “I’m so small.  What can I do?”

Here are just a few examples of things YOU CAN DO to let YOUR character shine:

  • Stop a bully from picking on a fellow student or, better yet, don’t be a bully – physically or verbally!
  • Give assistance to someone who is hurt or in trouble
  • Contribute baked goods to firefighters, sheriffs and police.
  • Write letters to our military personnel.
  • Help/assist the elderly, your neighbor or a friend.
  • Pick up trash in your neighborhood, parks and beaches.
  • Make cards for kids in the hospital.
  • Donate your hair to “Locks of Love” to be made into hairpieces for children suffering from medical hair-loss.
  • Participate in a fundraising walk.

The Six Pillars of Good Character:

Trustworthiness         Respect         Responsibility         Fairness         Caring         Citizenship

Capistrano Unified Announces Next Superintendent

Kirsten Vital to Lead the Highest-Performing, Large School District in California

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO— Kirsten M. Vital has been named the new Superintendent of the Capistrano Unified School District, succeeding Dr. Joseph M. Farley who will retire on July 1, 2014, as the leader of Orange County’s second-largest school district.

The Board of Trustees made the selection of Ms. Vital following a closed session meeting on June 14, 2014. A contract is expected to be ratified on Wednesday, June 25 at the Board of Trustees’ regularly scheduled meeting.

Ms. Vital Superintendent comes to CUSD from Alameda Unified School District in Alameda, California, where she is Superintendent.

A seasoned educator, Ms. Vital has held key leadership positions in some of California’s largest districts, including Los Angeles Unified School District and Oakland Unified School District. Vital has been a teacher, an assistant principal, principal, and a college professor.

To find the ideal candidate, the Board of Trustees conducted a nationwide search. The search was guided by a detailed list of leadership criteria, a web-based survey, community forum, and responses from focus groups representing community and district stakeholders.

Board President John M. Alpay expressed his confidence in Vital, "We wanted to ensure that we had the right person for this very important role during this critical time in our District," he said. "Because of her demonstrated track record of success, the Board of Trustees is certain that Kirsten Vital is the right leader who will take our District to new heights of student achievement."

Retiring Superintendent Dr. Joseph M. Farley has been widely praised for his leadership of the District over the last four years. Capistrano Unified schools have consistently ranked in the top one percent of California’s public schools. Successfully weathering the most recent economic recession, the District’s fiscal position was certified as "positive" by the Orange County Department of Education.

With over 4,000 employees, the new Superintendent will take the helm of the largest employer in South Orange County.

On Friday, 9/14 all students participated in our annual Positive Behavior Systems Assembly.  This is an assembly where we teach students the right choices to make here at school.  The presentation was given by Principal Scholl and is in two parts.  The first part was an assembly to discuss proper use of technology, computer lab and software on and off campus (this training is required by the State of CA for all children who will use technology at school).  The 2nd part of the presentation was all about the school rules around the playground.  At the end of the presentation, teachers take their classes around the campus to talk with them about the school rules in every area of our school, the playground, the lunch area, arrival and dismissal area, restrooms and hallways.  The two Powerpoint presentations are attached in case you'd like to check them out.

We are pleased to announce that CUSD is offering the Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program for fall of 2012.   To qualify, students must turn five years old Nov. 2-Dec. 2, 2012.    TK is being offered to students who, due to the kindergarten age rollback, miss the cutoff to enter kindergarten.   This will be the first year of a two-year kindergarten program provided for in the SB 1381 legislation or the Kindergarten Readiness Act 2010. Parents will need to transport their children.  At the end of the TK year, students will matriculate to their home schools for regular kindergarten.

To pre-register for the program, go to CUSD’s website under Parent Links, Transitional Kindergarten and Intent to Register.  The Intent to Register may be emailed directly to the District or delivered to the District office.  Pre-registered students will be assigned to one of three sites throughout the District, Crown Valley, Benedict and Bathgate Elementary Schools.  If you have any questions, please call or email Becky West at  or 949-234-9261.

Important Parent Portal Registration Information- sign- up by June 22!!

Dear Parents:

The CUSD Parent Portal is now available for parents of all current K-12 students.  We strongly encourage you to register for a Parent Portal account before school offices close in June, so you are able to take advantage of the new online re-registration system for the 2012-13 school year.   When the window opens in August, parents with portal accounts will have the ability to use this online system for re-registration, rather than completing the large, traditional paper packet. Parents will also have the ability at any time during the year to update student demographic and emergency contact records, view real-time daily attendance reports, print report cards and transcripts and also be able to download important documents directly from the portal.

Letters were mailed home the week of February 13 to parents of secondary students with specific information related to Parent Portal account creation. Parents of elementary students received their letters during parent conferences.  The information in the letter includes your student’s ID, home phone, and a unique verification code which will be needed during the portal registration process.  Using the information from the letter, simply logon to where you will find directions and a link for creating your Parent Portal account.  There is also a portal link on each school’s homepage. A HELP link is available at if you have questions during the registration process.  If you have lost your letter, please contact your school office before the last day of school.

Registration for Summer Camps Now Open

District Offers Programs for Students to Stay Active, Engaged During Break

South Orange County children can take advantage of a full range of enrichment activities and athletic classes through the Capistrano Unified School District community education program, also known as ACE.

“These activities and camps are a great way for students to stay active and engaged both mentally and physically during the summer months,” Superintendent Joe Farley said. “Our community education programs offer a number of high quality choices for students and their families.”

Among the diverse offerings are classes in computer game design, cooking, math and video production. Group, private, and semi-private swim lessons are available at four high schools and sports camps for students of all ages will be offered. For more information, call (949) 234-9482 or visit the CUSD ACE website. Classes begin June 25, 2012.

Returning this summer is the UC Irvine Writing Project, a three-week standards-based program that offers students an opportunity to develop their writing skills. An afternoon session that focuses on math and science is also available. Last summer the project attracted more than 300 children. Sessions will be held at Oso Grande and Laguna Niguel elementary schools. To register for the UCI Writing Project, call (949) 824-5922 or visit the project website.

All Bergeson parents, friends, and family can now place a Love Line message to their Bergeson student in any grade for inclusion in the 2011-2012 Yearbook!  The Love Line messages are a great way to congratulate your child, tell them how proud you are, and send them your love in a short (20 word maximum) note just like parents already send Shout Outs in the Bergeson BUGLE.  Love Lines are text only, no graphics or pictures, and will be printed in the same font as the rest of the Yearbook text.  But, time is short - you only have until March 30th to turn in your Love Line message for just $10 each.  We just heard about this great idea and the PTA wanted all parents to have a chance to share their sentiments - so please help us give this new program a try and share some Bergeson Love today!  Flyers are going home in backpacks this week and additional flyers are available in the front office or click HERE to copy yours from the Bergeson website.  For questions, please contact Lily Cifuentes at

All schools in the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) will be closed on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, due to the power outage affecting Southern Orange and San Diego counties.

The District, like many school districts serviced by San Diego Gas and Electric, has decided to cancel classes for its students. A decision regarding Friday evening sporting events has not yet been made.

“We have no assurance that power will be restored by the time school begins tomorrow morning, and local emergency jurisdictions have advised the District to suspend classes until power is restored,” Superintendent Joe Farley said. “We are sorry for the obvious inconvenience to our working families, but it is clearly not proper to have students in school without electricity to power key systems including lights, refrigeration, and computers.”

The decision to close schools was made for a number of reasons, including the lack of power at school sites and the difficulty many staff members will have commuting to work from their homes in Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties. Only the CUSD staff members who have been specifically notified should report to work on Friday, Sept. 9.

Power is expected to be restored in time for school on Monday. For more information, please call the District’s Hotline at (949) 234-5575, which will be open at 7 a.m. or visit the District website at

Copy this log, fill it out and become a Summer Shining Star!

If one person will go out of their way to show compassion, it will start a chain reaction.  You never know how far a little kindness can go.  Help a friend, neighbor, your grandparents or anyone who needs your help; collect aluminum cans and plastic bottles for school; help clean up at the beach, in your neighborhood, or your church; can you think of something you can do to help others?  Do this out of the goodness of your heart; volunteer your time; without receiving any pay.  You’ll see how wonderful it feels to give to others.  Write them down and turn in your form at the beginning of the school year.  If you get to 10, you will join us for a special BBQ lunch for our Summer Shining Stars.

Join us for the Casino Night on March 27!

Speaking of our charity auction, we are very excited to be able to have an Online Auction this year, so that our auction items can be viewed before the event, providing recognition and advertising for those donating items for auction. In order to have a successful auction, though, we are looking to you, our Bergeson families, for help.  Do you or someone you know have: a timeshare, cabin, second home, or motor home that you will not be using and you can donate for a week or two?  A special talent or skill ... Photography, Musical, Artistic, Designing, Cooking, you want to who off and can donate your talents?  Season tickets to a sporting event or theater? Do you know a business owner, restaurant owner, or have connections with a large corporation?  Now is the time to donate to get that last tax deduction for this year.  Do you know a Celebrity, or know of someone who knows someone that knows a Celebrity or Political Figure that would be willing to donate an autograph, photo, or maybe a “Lunch with…”? Help us make this auction a success!!!

Many business like to have a donation letter so we have attached the letter to this notification so that you can use it when you go to your favorite restaurants or businesses.

Thank you!

Make your reservation now because you won’t want to miss the First Annual Casino Night Gala, on March 27, at SOKA University from 6 to 11 PM right here in Aliso Viejo sponsored by our Bergeson Foundation.  Just $65 per person if you sign up before March 15, 2010 and all proceeds benefit Marian Bergeson Elementary School.  ($75 after 3/15) If you need a reservation form, click here.  Our Silent Auction will be online this year so you’ll get to check that out very soon.  Need a babysitter?  The YMCA will be offering childcare for the evening to include dinner and games.   Contact Caprice Crebar at (949) 922-8072 for more information.

Ralph's Supermarket Fundraiser

RALPH’S FUNDRAISER: HELP OUT YOUR TEACHERS WITH THE RALPHS’ COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION PROGRAM AND EARN A CHANCE TO RECEIVE A RALPHS GIFT CARD!  It’s EASY!  Take the flyer on the Bergeson Foundation website, give the flyer to the checker when you go to Ralph’s, they scan it and link it to your Ralph’s card and our school receives donations all year long!  With the severe budget cuts the school is dealing with, our teachers are in desperate need for assistance to provide our children the excellent education we have grown accustomed to at Bergeson Elementary.  Last year, Ralphs contributed $6,000 to the school.  This money was used to save the K-3rd Grade music program, buy new computers and abacuses, among other things.   We could not have done it without your help and, this year, we need your help more than ever.  Sign up for Ralphs’ Community Contribution program and each time you shop at Ralphs, it will contribute money to the school.  What’s more, if you sign up by October 9, you will be eligible to receive 1 of 3 $50 Ralphs Gift Cards the BESF will be raffling off.   Instructions to sign up were included in your Back-to-School packets.  If you have any questions regarding the program or need assistance in signing up, please contact Marc Mootchnik at (949) 632-9643.  Sign up Today!!!

Teacher Changes for 2009-2010

We are thrilled to have such amazing teachers at Bergeson School!  They are truly a gift to our wonderful community!  With the changes in class size, there have been many teacher changes for this school year.  Below is a listing of our current staff.  Many of our teachers will be "looping" their classes from last year.  In other words, if a teacher goes from grade 1 to 2, they would "loop" and have the same students with them next year.  Looping benefits students because they would start the school year with a teacher who knows the child's strengths and needs.  If you are not interested in having your child loop to the next grade with the same teacher, call or email principal, Barbara Scholl.  With students registering to enter school, there may be changes to these assignments below.

Kindergarten - Connie Meckel, Kathy Brewer

1st Grade - Jaci Terheggen, Celia Wortman, RoseAnn Roso, June Garner

2nd Grade - Gail Miller, Tracy Werner, Sherry Ritchie

3rd Grade - Celeste Gray, Beth Bell, Lisa Buchner (3/4 combo)

4th Grade - Wendy Thomas, Jeni Duff, Kathy Bennett

5th Grade - Holly Wiseman, Bill Paine, Karyn Jones/Sarah Hornig (partnership)
